Durability is defined as the capability of concrete to resist weathering action, chemical attack and abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties. It normally refers to the duration or life span of trouble-free performance. Different concretes require different degrees of durability depending on the exposure environment and properties desired. The ability of concrete to withstand the conditions for which it is designed without deterioration for a long period of years is known as durability. Durability of concrete may be defined as the ability of concrete to resist weathering action, che.

The generalised loading includen environmental effects into the structure like mechanic loading and weathering (sun, temperature changes, frost, moisture Cited by:

This book looks at the mechanisms for corrosion and how corrosion engineering can be used for these problems to be minimized in future projects. Several different examples of reinforced concrete structures with corrosion problems are described and the various. durability design of concrete structures [17, 18, 23 – 25], and in many countries, such durability design has been applied to a number of important concrete structures [ 26 – 29 ].

Overall, this is a great book written in a coherent and logical format; it offers a substantial review of the subject, exploring many of the wide-ranging 5/5(1).

Marine Concrete Structures: Design, Durability and Performance. comprehensively examines structures located in, under, or in close proximity to the sea.

A major emphasis of the book is on the long-term performance of marine concrete structures that not only represent major infrastructure investment and provision, but are also required to operate with minimal maintenance. This is a resource for graduate students studying deterioration resulting from reinforcement corrosionAuthor: Sudhir Misra. Durability of engineering structures uses on the design of buildings for service life, effective maintenance and repair techniques in order to reduce the likelihood of failure.

It describes the in situ performance of all the major man-made materials used in civil engineering construction - metals (steel and aluminium), concrete and wood. This book is concerned with the long term durability of concrete as a structural material as used in the construction of buildings, bridges, roads, marine and civil engineering structures.

It discusses the fundamental reasons for the deterioration of concrete over time and available techniques for d. Durability and strength are two most important criteria for the design of reinforced concrete structures.

These are the two requirements for the long term performance of concrete structures. Any deficiency in any of the two i.e. durability and strength, could make the structure unfit for the intended purpose.

This book provides an up-to-date survey of durability issues, with a particular focus on specification and design, and how to achieve durability in actual concrete construction. It is aimed at the practising engineer, but is also a valuable resource for graduate-level programs in universities.

Along. crete structures in Europe is in excess of $20 billion. This book intends to provide an understanding of how concrete elements in structures deteriorate, what must be done to protect structures from unacceptably rapid deterioration, and how existing durability problems can be identified and rectified.

Traditionally the durability design of concrete structures is based on implicit rules for materials, material compositions, working conditions, structural dimensions, etc. Examples of such ‘deem-to-satisfy’ rules are the requirements for minimum. Durability is an important concept to consider when it comes to specifying requirements for precast concrete products.

Products used above or below ground may be exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Without durability, the concrete product may deteriorate at a rate much faster than the anticipated life span of 50 to years.

This book is concerned with the long term durability of concrete as a structural material as used in the construction of buildings, bridges, roads, marine and civil engineering structures. It discusses the fundamental reasons for the deterioration of concrete over time and available techniques for detecting, remedying and preventing the deteriorati.

Since durability under one set of conditions does not necessarily mean durability under another, it is customary to include a general reference to the environment when defining durability.

Key words: Concrete, marine environment, chloride, blast furnace slag cement, reinforcement corro-sion, service life, probabilistic model 1 Introduction Durability of Concrete structures in marine environment has been an issue for many decades, due to the perception of sea water as aggressive to concrete and reinforcement and the long.Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is a major problem affecting the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, particularly for those in marine environments or exposed to de.Learning outcome.

The course should provide the students with an understanding of the typical mechanisms of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures and ability to predict the service life and suggest mitigating measures and repair strategies.
